Creating a Setting: Planned Play, Mystery Boxes, or Improvised Play
When making an American Girl Doll kitchen, it is important to choose a setting that will inspire your child’s creativity. Some possibilities include planned play, mystery boxes, or improvised play. For planned play, consider how your child wishes to cook or bake meals for her AG doll. For mystery box play, create a box of ingredients with specific instructions (for example, ‘Bake this cake according to the recipe in the box’). As your child cooks and bakes with her AG doll, she will learn about basic kitchen skills and acquire experience in creating recipes. Finally, for improvisational play, simply give your child a container or bowl filled with food and tools, and let her create meals and creations on her own.Whatever setting you choose, be sure to provide your child with plenty of opportunities to use her imagination and create adventures for her American Girl Doll kitchen!
Materials for a kitchen
To make an American Girl Doll kitchen, you’ll need a few materials: a stove, pots and pans, white tile and countertop, green felt fabric, a dining room table, and American Girl dolls.
1. Start by painting the stove white. Make sure to use a sturdy paint so that it can handle the heat of actual cooking.
2. Place the pots and pans on the stovetop. You’ll want at least two sizes of pots and pans; one for regular cooking and one for baking. Be sure to add a dishrag to the pot for cleaning!
3. To create a countertop, lay down white tile. Be sure to leave enough space around the edge of the stove so that American Girl dolls can stand up without touching the burners.
4. Once the countertop is complete, layer on green felt fabric to create a kitchen tablecloth. The table should be large enough that both dolls can comfortably stand up at it and eat their meals from designated dishes!
